Guilin moves to bilingual bus service
All public buses in the scenic city of Guilin have been making the station announcements in both Chinese and English since April 21, 2014; and adding English names is scheduled to sign at over 1,000 bus stops. The hope is that bilingual service will make bus travel more convenient for foreign residents and visitors.
This service got some positive comments from the citizens. A man named Chen said, "Shanghai is a popular tourist city, and is drawing more and more international travelers. Certainly, it is necessary to set up bilingual bus stops."
Previously, bus announcements and posted station names on Guilin's bus system are mostly in Chinese. Many foreign visitors wanted to take public buses, but were unable to understand the Chinese signs, while most drivers could not communicate in English.
In Guilin, many popular tourist attractions scattered around downtown area, including, Elephant Trunk Hill, Reed Flute Cave, and Seven Star Park, etc. And, most of the city buses will get travelers to reach them. Such bilingual buses service will improve the service quality in tourism.
